Approaching her thirteenth year of practice, Karen Boston has had the opportunity to help hundreds of people through difficult situations in her practice of family law, criminal law, personal injury and medical negligence.
Karen Boston's medical malpractice work involves the representation of only plaintiffs in cases against medical professionals and hospitals who have failed to meet the standard of care in cases that have resulted in catastrophic outcomes, including death. Karen's medical negligence work also includes litigation in the federal courts in cases against Veteran's Administration doctors.
A substantial portion of Karen Boston's practice is devoted to her family law practice. She handles divorces and custody disputes for clients in several counties. She is a past chair of the Maine State Bar Association's Family Law Section and also previously served as Vice Chair and Secretary. In this capacity, she has worked with family law attorneys throughout the state, reviewing and proposing legislation, as well as developing legal education programs for attorneys in family law. Ms. Boston has spoken at and organized several law seminars throughout the state.
Her criminal law practice involves representing persons accused of crimes ranging from motor vehicle offenses to sex crimes. Karen also has extensive experience in the firm's appellate practice. She has won numerous appeals before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, both in the family law and personal injury arenas. She has won a case before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court that set precedent in defining the tort of intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Karen received her undergraduate degree from Colby College in 1993 and her law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 1996. During law school, Karen represented indigent people in family law matters at the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic. Her experience helping people at the legal aid clinic reaffirmed for her that she wanted to represent individuals, rather than large corporations.
Karen is an active member of the Augusta community. She was born and raised in Augusta and has settled here with her own family. Karen has served as the President of the Kennebec County Bar Association (2004-2006), an organization comprised of over 250 attorneys and judges in the county and also formerly served as the Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer and a former vice president of the Board of the Kennebec County Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Kennebec Valley YMCA. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce Women's Network organization, and volunteers her time throughout the community. In her spare time, Karen enjoys running, playing tennis and spending time with family. She is the daughter of Sumner Lipman, the former senior partner who started the law firm in 1972.
